Class Schedule

FALL ASE classes will begin on Monday September 24th, 2018 and continue for 8 weeks ending on Wednesday November 14, 2018.  Week of November 19th will be for make up classes.

Monday AFTERNOONS 3:15p-4:15p

Fun with Yoga (grades K-5)  - $100

In each class we will introduce new yoga poses and a theme to the children. We ease into class with breathing methods to help focus and then practice some poses. This is followed by an enhancement where we teach yoga through talks, games, crafts, songs, music and other methods that kids love. We want kids to learn body awareness and to love movement and breath. They will gain strength in their bodies, calm in their minds and tools for life. Our teachers are experts at working with kids and all have children’s yoga teaching certificates. Join us and let’s have some fun with yoga together!

School House Chess (grades K-5) - $135

Schoolhouse Chess brings chess pieces to life using creative and animated personalities that enable students to learn the game in a fun and exciting way. Students become fascinated with imaginative chess characters that accelerate the learning process.They will learn a new skill each week. Intermediate students will be partnered up with kids on their skill level and be taught to improve upon the skills they have.  Our instructors bring all the materials and supplies to school and will cover the rules and strategies of chess. Students go home with their own chess set at end of session to practice at home!

Shockingly Sticky Science (grades K-2) - $135

In Shockingly Sticky Science, your child will learn Watts-Up with electricity and build their own static tubes, learn the marvels of magnets in Magnetic Magic as they construct their own Magnet Maze, and get sticky with polymers while we stretch it out with slime! We will explore all of our senses. In Tantalizing Taste, they will create their own soda pop; use their ears in Sonic Sounds and take home a very cool sonic horn; use their eyes in Optical Illusions and create their own periscope. Just when they thought they’ve had all of the awesome science they can handle, it’s time for Lights...Color...ACTION!!  They will create indoor “fireworks” lighting things up with fantastic lights and color displays, and as a grand finale to this amazing program the kids will learn all about heat and get to make their own cotton candy to eat. This program promises to be educational and entertaining, so don’t miss out on Shockingly Sticky Science!!!!


Robotics (grades 3-5) - $150

Explore the basic and complex technology used to design and build robots. Discover how machines and robots work and how they make our lives easier. Learn about simple machines, gear structure, battery wiring, motor principles, and electronic circuits. Experiment with different forms of locomotion – including wheels, legs, and “tracks.” Build your very own robot and other projects!

Price includes a $15 material fee


Crazy Chem Works (grades 3-5) - $135

In this awesome program, we will take on the role of a Jr. chemist as we create and concoct with science! From super sticky stuff to the amazing dry ice-capades, each class will take you on a journey through hands-on and amazing science. Create crazy chemical reactions, that pop, fizz, and even experiments that glow in the dark! Piece by piece throughout our program you will get to put together your very own home lab, complete with beakers, test tubes and all the tools of a great Mad Scientist. Don’t miss out Crazy Chem Works!


SLIMEMANIA (grades 1-4) - $135

Slimemania is a fun, hands-on, creative, collaborative, and science-minded course. It teaches how ingredients combine, cause a chemical reaction and change into something else that is amazing and fascinating.  Each week we will come up with different creations of slime utilizing different colors and ingredients. We will have themes for the slime creations each week for the kids to take home. On Mystery Box week, we will have "mystery box switch up" where I put ingredients in a box that they can’t see, and they will have to decide if they want to keep or switch ingredients to make a slime creation. At the end of this course, each child will have the ability to create his/her own slime recipe. There is so much we can create! Come join the fun!

Running Club (grades 2-5) - $20

The Watchung Running Club is a weekly running club that strives to promote physical fitness through fun games that teach agility, speed, coordination and stretching. The Running Club meets at 8am at Watchung Field. Parents can drop off; children will be walked into school at 8:40am. Classes are held weather permitting. Parents will receive an email by 7am if practice is canceled.

Chess in a Nutshell (grades 2-5) - $110

Start your day with a game of CHESS! Students (grades 2-5, any skill level) will learn the rules and etiquette of chess. Each session will include "mini-lessons" (covering a variety of strategies and tactics) and opportunities for students to hone their skills by playing practice games with their peers.  

The course instructor, Steve Moctezuma, is a chess coach and tournament director.  He annually directs the Montclair Cooperative School's/Zuma Summer Chess Camp.

Morning Board Games (grades K-2) - $115

Come join Mrs. Olson for some fun board games before school!  Does your child only play electronic games? Then it is time to send them in early for good old-fashioned board games. We will play Boggle, Scrabble, Connect 4, Battleship, Uno, and many others. We will have a Boggle competition where each player will try to better his/her own score from the previous games. We will also have a “bring your favorite game from home” day where your child is the teacher and shows the group how to play.  Focus will be on learning the rules of the games, sharing, taking turns, playing fair, socializing, and having FUN all withOUT technology. Once they have learned these games here, you can all play together at home!

ZUMBA (grades 1&2) - $115

Zumba Kids is a high-energy fitness party that features age-appropriate music and moves that get kids movin' to the beat. It's all about feeling fearless on the dance floor, reinforcing the idea that it's okay to just be yourself and dance like no one's watching. The kid-friendly routines are based on original Zumba® choreography.  The class includes steps in an easy-to-learn manner, games, activities an­d cultural exploration.

LitARTacy with Ms. Pepe (grades K-2)- $115

This exciting LitARTacy class is designed to build oral language, fluency, thinking skills, reading comprehension and creativity. This class is hands-on and activity based. Once we have read a book, the students will engage in a creative response activity which can be drama, art, games or writing. The activities and crafts will include anything from story bags, to writing about your favorite part, to painting, coloring, cutting and gluing, to acting out the story. The stories may include popular fairy tales, Pete the Cat, Eric Carle books, Laura Numeroff books, Rainbow Fish, Corduroy and holiday themed books… just to name a few! Come join me in making learning FUN!

LEGO ROBOT BUILDING (grades K-2) - $115

Legomania! We build new Lego robots every week around different themes:

•   animal bots (alligator, birds, etc.)

•   galaxy bots (aliens, rover, etc.)

•   battle bots (tank, catapult, etc.)

•   construction bots (power drill, chainsaw etc.)

•   wizard bots (spinning trolls, magic carpet, etc.)

•   game bots (lego kart, pinball)

•   kinder bots (windmill, helicopter, etc.)

Students learn about basic engineering concepts such as gears, pulleys, levers and more.

STAR WARS STEM (grades 3-5) -  $115

Develop STEM skills while having fun with Star Wars!

•   Build your own droid using the engineering design process

•   Code your own virtual Star Wars galaxy

•   Make some fun Star Wars science experiments (make your own lava slime or star play dough)

•    And finally have fun with some Star Wars math games.

CALLING ALL COOKS (grades K-2) - $140

Each week your child will prepare and enjoy food from different regions of the world. During the class, we will discuss proper kitchen safety. All materials needed for the class including food, paper goods, cooking utensils are included. At the end of the course, each student will be presented with a cookbook that includes all the recipes we prepared. Students should bring their own water bottle with them to class. Families will be responsible for alerting teacher to any food allergies before the beginning of the course.

Cost of food supplies ($25) included in price. Taught by Watchung Teacher, Mrs. LaGrua. Max class size is 12

TREP$ (grades 4&5) - $155

TREPS is an award winning entrepreneurial education program that teaches 4th and 5th grade children how to create, develop and launch their own business. In these fast-paced classes, students learn about product development, marketing, finance, advertising and sales through fun workshops and activities. Students will be given ‘seed money’ to start their business and will sell their product at the TREPS Marketplace at the end of the semester.


  • This session will focus on handmade/craft items.

  • This class involves parent participation and students will be given homework that is required to complete.

  • There are limited spots for this class so please sign up ASAP!

World of Colors (Art/Cultural class) (grades K-5) - $105

Art is the universal language everyone speaks.  Get ready to discover art from around the world!  Students will make cool multicultural projects as they learn more about the world around them. Projects will reflect geography, indigenous or modern culture, popular art techniques, or traditional art styles.  Each week, students will study a new country and create a 2D or 3D art project that reflects the culture of the country.

Hip Hop (grades K-2) - $105

This is an upbeat and high-energy class. We will focus on fundamental dance moves, stretching techniques, isolations, rhythms, and musicality. The class will aim to develop coordination and upper body strength while incorporating funky footwork. Students will collaborate with each other and memorize choreography to learn a dance routine each class. Please bring water, wear comfortable clothing and a positive attitude to class! Taught by Watchung Kindergarten teacher Ms. Schott.

Still Life Painting Class (grades K-2) - $105

Each week your child will learn about different masterpieces and try to make one themself. This class will focus on sketching objects and looking at them from different perspectives.  We will talk about sizing, shapes, and background as we first sketch each item. Students will learn about dimension and try to look for details to highlight. After outlining our sketches and we will finish them with watercolor paints.  Our subjects will include flowers, pinecones, pumpkins, fruit, and much, much more!

Science Explorers (grades K-2) - $105

Each week, students will explore a different science theme and make fun experiments and projects related to earth science, physics, or chemistry. Children will follow the scientific method of prediction, experiment, observation and conclusion.

Science Experiment examples include:

•   make your own slime, lava lamp or volcano,

•   learn about the difference between wet ice and dry ice,

•   learn about the different weather and create your own clouds, rain, or snow,

•   experiment with dry ice,

•   extract DNA of a fruit,

•    use microscopes to observe and learn about cells

•   make your own SPA products: soap, bath salt, sugar scrubs and more.

Rollercoaster Engineering (grades 3-5) - $105

Explore the thrill of building your own amusement park. Learn basic concepts of engineering and physics as you design and build a safe roller coaster and theme park rides. Identify machines and use the following concepts: momentum, force, gravity, friction, motion, gears, and pulleys.

Taught by Montclair Learning Center.


Minimum Class Requirements

Most classes require a minimum of 8-13 students to run. The PTA reserves the right to cancel any class if not enough students are signed up. Parents will be notified as soon as possible and given the opportunity to get a refund or sign up for another class.


Refund Policy

If you no longer want to participate in ASE, we will refund your money within 2 weeks of starting class.  After (DATE), no refunds will be given.


Code of Conduct

Students will maintain the same behavior standards expected during school hours

Watchung’s Code of Conduct will be strictly enforced:

  • First incident: Child sent to office

  • Second incident: Parent notified

  • Third incident: Child will not be allowed to return to ASE

It is the parent’s/caregiver’s responsibility to communicate behavior expectations to child


ASE Scholarship Program

As in previous years, the PTA will provide a limited number of ASE scholarships for eligible students . Scholarships will cover 100% of the class cost. Availability is limited to 1 class per eligible child. These scholarships will be awarded in order of application date and availability of space in the desired class.

To apply for one of the scholarships, email the ASE team at with the following information:

  • Name of child

  • Grade

  • Homeroom teacher

  • parent contact info (name, email/phone)

  • desired class (provide up to 3 selections in order of priority

  • We will do our best to accommodate your first choice


Reminder: Scholarships are offered for only 1 class per eligible child. Scholarships  are available only to families that require financial assistance. The PTA does not require any documentation to establish eligibility.
