CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

 

Monday Afternoons

MusicStart (grades K-2)- $150

MusicStart® is a patented progressive music learning system that balances fun and development of skills.  Using familiar songs, it teaches all the necessary basics to get started playing music. The MusicStart® Keyboard is especially designed for learning.  It uses 4 instructive Attachments that vary the challenge from color matching to letter matching to note matching and reading standard musical notation.  MusicStart® is preparation for (or a supplement to) playing any instrument and teaches step-by-step problem solving.  All materials and keyboard are provided.

SLIMEMANIA Fall Series (grades K-5)- $120

Slimemania is a fun, hands-on, creative, collaborative, and science-minded course. It teaches how ingredients combine, cause a chemical reaction and change into something else that is amazing and fascinating. Each week students will come up with different creations of slime utilizing different colors and ingredients. On Mystery Box Week the instructor will put ingredients in a box that students can’t see, and they will have to decide if they want to keep or switch ingredients to make a slime creation. At the end of this course, each child will have the ability to create his/her own slime recipe. There is so much to create! Come join the fun!

Make and Enjoy Pottery Everywhere! (grades 3-5) - $135

This class is designed for aspiring artists of all levels who share an interest in learning to work with clay. Artists will explore with different types of clay various techniques such as pinch pot, coil pot, slab building and more, to develop creative pieces. This is an imaginative, hands on class that allows students of all ages to enjoy and make pottery everywhere. 

Taught by Kanae Yunome, a long time ceramic artist and Montclair Resident.

 

Jiu Jitsu (grades K-2) - $165

This class is A fun and dynamic introduction to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu led by Montclair’s own North South BJJ. With a focus on self-defense, cooperation, and respect, students will learn new skills, grow in confidence and independence, and get great exercise!  Jiu Jitsu is a grappling art, meaning no striking, students will learn and practice techniques to get out of various holds and positions. You don’t need any prior martial arts or sports experience to join a class. 

Please wear comfortable clothes and sneakers to class.

Tuesdays Mornings

 

Chess in a Nutshell (grades 2-5, all skill levels) - $140

Win, lose, or draw, chess is a fun, challenging game.  This course promotes problem solving skills and good sportsmanship.  Students will learn the rules of chess, strategies and tactics, and chess etiquette. Students will also be allotted time each session to play practice games with their peers.  

 

Taught by chess coach Steve Moctezuma, who is a United States Chess Federation (USCF)-certified tournament director.  He founded and directs the Zuma Summer Chess Camp (which recently concluded its 12th annual camp) at the Montclair Cooperative School.  He also conducts chess workshops for students, parents, and teachers.

 

Snap Circuits (grades K-2) - $130

Ever wonder what makes a light bulb light up or a buzzer buzz? Join Mrs. Thorp as you safely explore the world of electrical circuits. Students will use their problem solving skills as they follow step by step directions in order to build exciting projects such as doorbells, light switches, and whirling flying fans. This is a "learn by doing" class that is sure to spark

your curiosity!

Little Bookworms with Ms. Ernst (grades 2-3) - $125

Do you love to read? Do you love to talk about the stories and characters you read about? Do you like to share your opinion and hear others? Then, this is the class for you.  Come join me as we read two books together over the course of the class.  We will read a specified amount of pages per week and then discuss, do arts and crafts, as well as activities that go along with the books we are reading.  The two books are: “Frecklejuice” by Judy Blume and “The Boxcar Children” (book 1) by Gertrude Chandler Warner.  Books should be provided by the student and brought to the first class. (Purchased or borrowed.)

Still Life Painting Class (grades K-2) - $125

Each week your child will learn about different masterpieces and try to make one themself. This class will focus on sketching objects and looking at them from different perspectives.  We will talk about sizing, shapes, and background as we first sketch each item. Students will learn about dimension and try to look for details to highlight.  After outlining our sketches we will finish them with watercolor paints.  Our subjects will include flowers, pinecones, pumpkins, fruit, and much, much more!

Tuesday Afternoons

Tumbling/ Gymnastics for Boys and Girls! (grades K-2) - $165

Enroll your child in a high energy fun class where they will be learning new tricks in a safe environment instead of flipping off your bed or couch.

The class starts with a warm-up then follows with all the fun activities: Mat, beam, trampoline etc. Students are spotted individually according to their ability and will be challenged to learn a new skill each week.  All levels are welcome. 

No classes will be held on 11/2 as the gym is needed for the TREP$ marketplace.

CALLING ALL COOKS (grades 3-5) - $155

Each week your child will prepare and enjoy food from different regions of the world. During the class, we will discuss proper kitchen safety. All materials needed for the class including food, paper goods, cooking utensils are included. At the end of the course, each student will be presented with a cookbook that includes all the recipes we prepared. Students should bring their own water bottle with them to class. Families will be responsible for alerting teacher to any food allergies before the beginning of the course. Cost of food supplies included in price.

TREP$ (grades 4&5) - $160

TREPS is an award winning entrepreneurial education program that teaches 4th and 5th grade children how to create, develop and launch their own business. In these fast-paced classes, students learn about product development, marketing, finance, advertising and sales through fun workshops and activities. Students will be given ‘seed money’ to start their business and will sell their product at the TREPS Marketplace at the end of the semester. This session will focus on handmade/craft items. This class involves parent participation and students will be given homework that is required to complete. There are limited spots for this class so please sign up ASAP!

Jewelry Making (grades K-2) - $140

Come join Mrs. Pepe and make some jewelry! Our young designers will choose from a selection of beads and materials to create bracelets, necklaces, earrings and pendants. From alphabet beads to friendship bracelets, our focus is to have fun, fun, fun!! We will even make a jewelry box to keep it all in! I hope to see you there!

Cost includes $15 material fee.

Stem-Tactics! (grades K-3) - $125

Students will have the opportunity to test various concepts within the
STEM disciplines. Emphasis will be on an integrated approach to using science, technology, engineering and mathematics. They will ask, hypothesize, interpret, discover, create, imagine, and solve problems. Each week will bring new ideas to brainstorm, new problems to solve, and new hypothesis to test. Come join us in this exploration!

Wednesday Mornings

Morning Board Games (grades K-2) - $100

Come join Mrs. Olson for some fun board games before school!  Does your child only play electronic games? Then it is time to send them in early for good old-fashioned board games. We will play Boggle, Scrabble, Connect 4, Battleship, Uno, and many others. We will have a Boggle competition where each player will try to better his/her own score from the previous games. We will also have a “bring your favorite game from home” day where your child is the teacher and shows the group how to play.  Focus will be on learning the rules of the games, sharing, taking turns, playing fair, socializing, and having FUN all withOUT technology. Once they have learned these games here, you can all play together at home!

Move IT! (grades K-5)- $100

When it comes to learning a whole lot of cool ways of exercising, this class is the way to go.   Fitness can be fun, particularly when kids think that they are playing games. Move It! explores various ways of staying healthy and active, using games, obstacle courses, dance, martial arts, yoga and bootcamp type exercises.  Each week, we will move to a different form of exercise and learn the benefits of it. The ultimate goal is for students to be engaged, active and having a ton of fun.

Woodwork Sign Making with Ms. Schott (grades 3-5) - $125

Turn a piece of wood into a work of art! Using sketching, sanding, and painting techniques, your child will get a sense of pride as they create their own wooden décor for your home or as a gift for a special loved one. This hands-on class will use various sizes of wood to create beautiful signs. Projects will include signs for upcoming holidays, a personalized name sign, inspirational signs, etc. They’ll learn how to sketch their own designs and bring them to life on a piece of wood using different painting techniques. Come paint your little hearts out!
Cost includes material fee of $25.

BUILD IT 2.0 with Mrs. Thorp and Mrs. Olson (grades 1-4) - $110

What can you do with old magazines, some glue, and string? Build a teepee of course, or wait... maybe a beaded necklace, a paper chain, or a maze. The possibilities are endless. In this class students will be provided with a myriad of materials to create and build. Some days they will have structured STEAM challenges such as: build the tallest possible tower out of bottle caps and legos or build an electrical circuit that powers a fan. Other days, students will be given specific materials and can let their imaginations run wild as the build. Mrs. Thorp and Mrs. Olson have a lifetime of experience tinkering, crafting, and building something out of "nothing." They can't wait to share it with you! (Note: new projects planned so repeat students are welcome!)

World of Colors (Art/Cultural class) (grades K-5) - $100

Art is the universal language everyone speaks. Get ready to discover art from around the world! Students will make cool multicultural projects as they learn more about the world around them. Projects will reflect geography, indigenous or modern culture, popular art techniques, or traditional art styles. Each week students will study a new country and create a 2D or 3D art project that reflects the culture of that country.

Football 101(grades 3-5) - $100

Students will learn the basics of football. Students will be broken up into grade level groups where the  focus will be on proper ball handling technique (the correct way to hold catch and run with the football) while also practicing the key element of safety.  There will be simple age appropriate mini games and drills during the session where students will demonstrate what they have learned while practicing good sportsmanship and  teamwork. 

Recommend: Participants can bring a change of shirt/blouse, in the event he/she will need to change.
